Wi-Fi is a collision-based, shared-medium access technology with air being the transport medium. However, access to the air is the scarcest resource. As the air medium is used by a single device at a time, essentially the devices are competing for the airtime resources.
As the number of devices associated with the access point increases, so too does the struggle to allocate enough time to serve them all. As such, it is all too common for a device with a poor signal to monopolize the air resources and negatively impact the performance of the entire Wi-Fi network.
